The coronavirus outbreak has created demanding and difficult situations for everyone. And people are responding to stress and fear in various ways all around the globe. One of the ways most often seen is panic buying. One behaviour in particular, however, seems to be common in many countries, regardless of nationality, culture, or age, and it’s a Toilet Paper Hoarding.

There’re many reasons why we do this. According to experts, here are some of them:

Most people only buy toilet paper when they just about run out, which could be a problem if you need to stay isolated for two weeks. So toilet paper hoarding could be just a preparation process, particularly that toilet paper is the perfect product. It is completely non-perishable and one of the few products that you can stock up on that you are guaranteed to use, eventually. Also, there aren’t easy substitutions and if there’s no toilet paper, then that’s pretty frustrating for everyone.

A lot of people likely also use toilet paper as a tissue, and therefore they imagine themselves needing a lot if they have the flu-like illness.

Stocking up on toilet paper is also a relatively cheap action, and people like to think they are “doing something” when they feel at risk. As hoarding makes people feel secure. This is especially relevant when the world faces a novel disease over which all of us have little or no control. But we can control things like having enough toilet paper in case we are quarantined, which gives us a sense of security.

However, most of those who are hoarding toilet paper are probably overstocked. And coronavirus stockpiling hits the most vulnerable as, for instance, some food banks say they have a shortage of basic items which have already been panic bought by shoppers.

That’s why supermarkets keep asking shoppers to be ‘considerate’ and stop stockpiling and to think about others.

This simple tool requires you to only input three numbers, from which it will calculate the number of rolls required.

How many people are in your household?
How many days will the quarantine last?
how much paper does your family usually use?

And the result will be the number of rolls you need to buy.

The toilet paper calculator will also tell you how much water and wood is needed to produce this amount of toilet paper – as the production of one roll requires 37 gallons of water and 1.5 pounds of wood.

If you’ve already done your shopping, the calculator will tell you how long your supply will last.

You will need to provide the calculator with the following data:

Number of people in the household

Decide if your family uses excessive amounts of toilet paper, or if you’re planning on saving it for more scarce times.

Input the number of toilet paper rolls that you’ve purchased.

The calculator will tell you how long this supply will last you, and when you will need to repurchase toilet paper.

So now you know how not to overstock with toilet paper and to be more considerate when shopping.
